Shetland Sheepdog (Sheltie)
Shelties are an outstanding companion dog with a lovely temperament and are gentle, sensitive, loyal and dainty. Sheltie puppiesare high energy, highly intelligent and extremely trainable. They love to run and chase things and do well in agility training as well as herding, their natural instinct. The Sheltie is one of the smartest breeds, and a Sheltie puppy is extremely willing to please their master. Shelties are very loyal and affectionate with their family, but generally are suspicious of strangers. Sheltie puppies are wonderful with families and get along well with other pets and love children. Really agreatdog for all.
The Shetland Sheepdog, like the Collie, traces to the Border Collie of Scotland, which, transported to the Shetland Islands and crossed with small, intelligent, longhaired breeds, was reduced to miniature proportions. Subsequently crosses were made from time to time with Collies. This breed now bears the same relationship in size and general appearance to the Rough Collie as the Shetland Pony does to some of the larger breeds of horses. Although the resemblance between the Shetland Sheepdog and the Rough Collie is marked, there are differences which may be noted. The Shetland Sheepdog is a small, alert, rough-coated, longhaired working dog. He must be sound, agile and sturdy. They are a herding dog and very family orientated. (Source AKC Breed Standard)
Shelties do have a grooming requirement and need frequent brushing to keep their coats clean.
If the Shetland Sheepdog matches your lifestyle, the Sheltie is a good fit for you.
